IKEA’s approach to discoverability

A journalist recently asked me to give an analogy to illustrate AppCarousel, and here’s what I said …

The furniture store IKEA does have a big warehouse full of brown boxes in each store, but they don’t expect you to go searching in there for furniture.  they help you discover what you need (and sometimes what you didn’t even know you needed!) by putting together themed showrooms, targeted at specific needs and types of buyer.  When you see something you like, you don’t pick it up – you head to the warehouse to get it.  That’s the next wave of the app economy … app showcasing, discovery, and targeting, abstracted from the app stores themselves.
